I will be looking at what sort of questions I should ask my target audience and why. It is pivotal that I ask the right questions in order to gain an indication of whether the Urban-Action film idea will be popular  I intend on asking a number of questions; some will be qualitative and others quantitative. The reason for this is because it will not only help me analyze data but also take peoples individual thoughts into account. A problem I have already identified is how am i going to record all the qualitative data but I understand that I must go through them individually.

My firs video shows the codes/ conventions of an action movie. This helps me identify what sort of codes i should include in my opening two minutes. The movie shows codes and conventions for  horror films but I'm not intrested in that thus the part im intrested in is from the 1st minute onwards.

            

Here is another example of the codes/ conventions of an action movie that i can also take ideas from.

Film certificate -18

                                   

This age certificate is the secnod highest among the cetificates and it states that no-one under the age of 18 can watch this film. The 18 cerificate is very important as you are deemed as an adult when you turn 18 thus an 18 certificate will be able to inculde extreme adult language, sex scenes and horror.It will also be able to include such topics such as hard drugs, alcohol, weapons and blood. The reason these topics are seen in 18 rated movies, is because people aged 18 and over will be mature enough to watch movies such as this and not take it too seriously.

The Location of my Movie will be set in Therfield school. This is because it is a easily accessible location to film at and moreover it will compliment the genre of my movie. More specifically, it will be set in the English corridor of the school and the field as well. This again will shun out the genre of the movie as an empty, deserted place.




6th December 2012
After two months and a better idea of what my movie is going to be about, we have decided not to use the school as a location but we require an alleyway and below are a few of them.

We have been sampling a few locations, at the appropriate times, by appropriate times, I mean evening times because it suits our setting for the film assignment. The darkness in the sky immediately gives extra mystery and anticipastion as to what is going to happen. Another key element is the openness, this will help the audience see everything and the lighting adds to the 'fear' factor of the clip.

     This is an update on our previous post. We firstly decided that we would set it primarily in the school but then decided that it will be more effective in an alleyway. We will still film in the school for the bosses office but the school won't play as big of a part as we first imagined.

As you can see from this, the lighting is more detailed and more specified thus all lighting will be natural. This alleyway looks better than the first one and the graffiti emphasizes that it is quite a rough and urban area. This pathway is called Waterfields and another reason why it's really good is because on one side there is a dark wall and on the other side is a white wall. The white wall will be good because there will be blood in our movie and it can really be seen clearly on this wall.

After further research into location, we have found more research for our second alley way location. This alleyway is located in Kingscroft Road.

 

We will get lighting through the lamposts which will hopefully light up the whole alleyway.

The reason this is a good location is because it offers an additional location after the alleyway and thus we will have more room for filming but I'm still a bit worried about the lighting and so we have the secondary location. We may even use both alleyways.

Decision

After a lot of thought, my group and I have decided that location 2 will be the best for us. The reacon being is because the natural lighting in that alleyway at night is much better than the other two locations. Moreover, I believe that the fact that it has two different coloured walls tells me that this location has a lot of potential and if we are to use blood, it will be most dramatical in this location as opposed to the other two.

Font Research

One specific similarity I have identified is the font and how films from the same genre have similar font. In this post, I will be looking at similar genre films to mine and comparing fonts. Below are three movies that are similar to my urban-action movie.



The three movie I have identified are Green Street, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz which are most similar to mine. The first thing I identify in all of the movies is the use of the colour red which suggests that red is the colour that is best associated with urban/action/horror type genres. Moreover all three movies show quite explicit scenes of blood which is something else that the colour red denotes.
    All of the movies have a similar bold font. Furthermore, when looking at green street and shaun of the dead, both title look quite battered which may show that this movie contains action.

I believe that the font of my title must be red to denote violence and should be bold because all the fonts for these movies are bold.

Camera shots to consider - 180 degree rule

The 180 degree rule is put in place to avoid confusion by the audience. If you were to deviate from the 180 degree rule, then it would seem as if the character has changed position. As the graph below shows, anywhere in the green shaded area can be filmed from but if the camera were to go into the red shade area, then it would seem as if the two characters have switched positions.
                                       

                                             
In film making, the 180-degree rule, is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene. An imaginary line called the axis connects the characters and by keeping the camera on one side of this axis for every shot in the scene, the first character will always be frame right of the second character, who is then always frame left of the first. If the camera passes over the axis, it is called crossing the line or jumping the line.

Problem caused and Solutions

The 180-degree rule enables the audience to visually connect with unseen movement happening around and behind the immediate subject and is important in the narration of battle scenes. The visual disjointedness of the battle scene on Geonosis in the Star Wars film Attack of the Clones is an example.^[2]

Avoiding crossing the line is a problem that those learning film-craft will need to struggle with. In the above example with the car chase, a possible solution is to begin the second cut with the car driving into frame from the "wrong" side. Although this may be wrong in the geographic sense on set, it looks more natural to the viewer. Another possibility is to insert a "buffer shot" of the subject head-on (or from behind) to help the viewer understand the camera movement.

The 180 degree rule has to be adhered to and is put in place to avoid confusion for the audience. Film Certificate - 15

The film certificate 15 is for ages 15 and over.

Nobody under the age of 15 will be able to watch a 15 rated movie. This is because of the following:

• It can involve adult themes.
• It can involve the use of heavy drugs.
• Strong language.
• Moderate sex references.
• Some moderate horror scenes
• Some references to murders and blood.

An Example of a 15 certificate movie is:
           

 

This movie is a perfect example of a movie that is rated aged 15.

                                                  
The inbetweeners movie is a perfect example of a 15 certificate movie because it shows really clearly many of characteristics of a 15 rated movie such as the adult themes, nudity and strong language. People may think that there may nudity scenes may be still too explicit for a 15 rated movie and thus argue that the movie should have a 18 certificate.

I believe that a 15 ceftificate movie is perfect for for me is because I will be able to include action scenes and rather violent language. Moreover i can include some blood in the movie and my audience profiling for similar genre movies to mine and so they have also given me a indication that the 15 certificate is good for me.

Film Certificate - 12/12A

The certificate 12/12A is suitable for 12 years and over.

What is 12A?

    12A is for cinema use only and states that this movie is for 12 years and over or can be watched if accompanied by an adult. This is because there may be some material that may not be deemed even for 12 year old's but this may not apply to all 12 year old's and so there is a rating of 12A which is a bit more lenient.  

Discriminatory language or behaviour must be kept to a minimum if any. There are also moderate sex scenes, soft drugs and some references to aggression and violence. The use of horror should also be moderate. The soft drugs can be shown in 12A certificate movies but may not be glamorized or educational. 

    Sex and nudity is bot allowed but still rather limited in the sense that too much nudity are prohibited along with what is included in the sex scene.  

Movies that have the 12A certificate:

The hunger games is a brilliant example of a 12A movie because it includes all aspects  of discriminatory language and behaviour as well as some scenes that may be deemed as inappropriate for a 12 year old but that is why adults can approve it as it's very difficult to identify the correct age for this movie.

The reason I wont choose a 12A certificate for my movie is because it may still limit me to what I can include. Moreover as most of the audience profiling i have done on urban-action movies, I know that a 12A certificate is too low for the type of movie i want to make.

Film Certificates - PG

PG stands for Parental Guidance

The PG film certificate is generally for everyone but as it's above U, there would be inevitably some scenes that may not be suitable for children. Despite this, most famous family films are PG and the scenes that may not be suitable for children are generally kept to a minimum.

     Unlike the U certificate, there can be small indications of adult humor and language as this movie is for ages 8 and over.

     Despite this, horror and violence scene may not be explicit especially horror scenes as it may affect the child's future. To summarize, the use of horror and violence must be moderate.     The use of weapons should also be kept to a minimum as it may give children the wrong idea and having a gun in a scene may make the children believe it's okay to own a gun in the future and thus manipulate children minds.                                                       
     There can be natural nudity, but none that give an indication of a sexual scene and any references to sex must be mild.

    As this certificate can be watched by ages eight and over, it's really the parent or guardians decision whether their child will be able to watch it or whether the content may upset their young children.
 

Star Wars is another PG rated movie but it does include
some scenes that may not be deemed for children
that can get easily upset but that depends on the
parent or caregivers decision.

Examples of PG Movies:

Alvin and the Chipmunks is a PG and will be seen as acceptable for ages eight .

Should I use this certificate for my movie?

I Believe that the PG certificate will restrict my movie to what I would like to do as my action scene will still be too violent for a child audience and so I think that this certificate is still not right for me and my movie, Moreover the language used in my movie may be deemed as inappropriate for a movie that is PG.

Film Certificates- U

U = Universal
Universal = Suitable for all ages.

A U film is a movie that is essentially aimed for ages four and over. The reason that there aren't many U certificate films is because it is really difficult to identify what will be deemed suitable for four year old's. 

   Restrictions:

As this has aimed for the lower age of the spectrum, it is bound to have the most restrictions. These are:

1. The use of language must be very closely inspected as these types of movies are aimed for four year old's.
2. No sexual activity and kissing will be at a minimum. Possibly the odd kiss on the cheek.
3. No horror or violence permitted. in these certificate movies because it could possibly affect them in future life.
4. No references to drugs or alcohol.

   Despite all of these restrictions, there are still a wide range of movies with this type of certificate. U rated films don't necessarily have to be for kids but they are just films that don't contain any of the restrictions above.  

   

   Is this suitable for my movie?:

I believe my Movie won't be acceptable for the U certificate as my movie does have some of the restrictions the this certificate has.
